Psychotherapy with Families

“When I began to think of human problems as inevitable in the way a family develops over time, I realized that Dr. Erickson’s therapy was largely based upon that assumption.” -Jay Haley

When I work with families I am committed to align myself simultaneously with each member of the family. I track the unconscious themes and structures which keep each member stuck in habitual responses. They shift into their automatic roles and and play out continuously, often in painful patterns that keep everyone emotionally immobilized and defensive.

I use a lot of gentle, and sometimes surprising, hypnotic tools to interrupt their repetitive patterns, creating safety for everyone, sometimes shifting into humor and playfulness in addition to maintaining connection with the invisible bonds at the root of the pain and rage so that these bonds become visible and the pain dissolves or transforms.

The goal is to make it possible for each family member to feel safe enough to discover his/her own unique truth even in the “bosom” of the family and to be able to express it congruently and respectfully.

“Discover their patterns of happiness.” – Milton H. Erickson, MD
